Do the fuel trim values increase or decrease when giving it gas?

What are the fuel trim values at idle? Do they change when pressing the gas peddle?

Pretty late response, but you could disable fuel by pulling the fuel pump relay and letting the vehicle idle until it sputters out of gas. When you are ready to start it again, turn key forward and wait 3-4 seconds, turn off, turn forward and wait 3-4 seconds and then it should start right up.

Sounds like leaking fuel injectors, especially if you smell gas as the person above stated. While the car sits overnight, the gas leaked from the rail and seeped slowly down past the pistons, so the combustion chamber is clean when you start in the morning. But after you run it and stop, there is still fresh gas leaking into the cylinders and flooding them, making it hard to start until it finishes leaking down.

By pushing the gas pedal down all the way before trying to start, the PCM will cut the injector pulse, and so it may fire up without flooding it by adding extra gas. Try this next time it’s warmed up and won’t start- pedal down all the way then try starting. If that helps it start, then it’s the injectors.

That’s interesting. I wonder if maybe the radiator fans kicking on once it got warm were drawing enough load to shut it down. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah about $800 is the cheapest price I could find for a bi-directional tool. A 2002 vehicle might not have a ton you can do to make use of such a tool for that price. Try Torque Pro with a good up to date adapter (minimum ELM version 2.2) and you can at least get mode 6 data and one of the best at home scanner programs.

Any check engine lights? Have you checked or cleaned the idle air control? Is the throttle cable hanging up on something? Checked/tested TPS?

Where is your exhaust leak coming from exactly? And I imagine there’s a check engine light…what are the codes?
