We removed the valve cover and didn’t see any damage to cams, didn’t see any discoloration from heat. Could it be coming from the crankshaft bearings or other components in the block? We are having a sample of the oil tested to see what kind of particles are there.

If that is the problem, what would cause it being that it is a rebuilt head?

          Update:
I have been driving the car for a bit now. Temperature has been fine, but there is a code: P0011. When it warms up, it wants to stall at idle. I have replaced the variable timing sensor and cleaned the small oil filter screen twice from small metal fibers. I have also replaced the camshaft sensor. I drained the oil after 1500 miles and it has a bit of a metallic look to it.

Both pulleys are new; we replaced both with a timing belt kit. As far as I can tell, it’s just the belt.

We did end up replacing the cylinder head. Everything is running fine, but I noticed that the timing belt has a small wobble to it. What would be the cause of that and could it create issues? It’s not completely centered on the cam shaft gear.

I’m in contact with them. Thanks for the information.

I just removed the head and I do have bent valves. Does anyone know of a good mechanic or shop in the north Denver area that can do a valve job? Or would it be better to get a refurbished head and just replace it?

I have put a new timing belt on with both cam and crank in time, ran a compression test and have 120# on 1 and 2, and 0 on 3 and 4 (bent valves?). I guess my next step would be to remove the head and look at the valves?

Just confirmed. Took off the top timing belt cover and the belt is gone. Thanks for your help.

It doesn’t sound normal. I just did a compression test. 30 lbs on#1, 0 on the rest. From research, it looks like my engine is an interference engine, which seems to mean that there is probably some damage due to the timing belt failure.

I have not done a compression test. The check engine light is not on and there are no codes. Would there be a code with the timing belt?
