I was driving down I70 and my manual Elantra just died; it seemed to loose all compression as I coasted off the road. Got it towed home. Symptoms: it cranks but will not start, and the tachometer doesn’t move at all; it has spark at the coil, and I pulled an injector and tested it which also works (I can’t find a Schroeder valve so I need to come up with a different way to test the fuel pump). I sprayed starter fluid in the intake, and it still doesn’t even try to start. I’ve checked all of the fuses and the fuel pump sounds like it is working when the ignition is turned on.
January 27, 2019 at 9:41 am #30066I think a compression test is next in line. How does it sound when you crank it?
January 27, 2019 at 1:47 pm #30067Kinda sounds like a broken timing belt. Compression test would verify that.
January 27, 2019 at 2:18 pm #30096I have not done a compression test. The check engine light is not on and there are no codes. Would there be a code with the timing belt?
January 27, 2019 at 6:18 pm #30097I wouldn’t expect there to be any codes. When you crank the engine does it sound normal or does it kinda free wheel?
January 27, 2019 at 7:21 pm #30098It doesn’t sound normal. I just did a compression test. 30 lbs on#1, 0 on the rest. From research, it looks like my engine is an interference engine, which seems to mean that there is probably some damage due to the timing belt failure.
January 27, 2019 at 9:09 pm #30128Just confirmed. Took off the top timing belt cover and the belt is gone. Thanks for your help.
February 22, 2019 at 3:03 am #34726I have put a new timing belt on with both cam and crank in time, ran a compression test and have 120# on 1 and 2, and 0 on 3 and 4 (bent valves?). I guess my next step would be to remove the head and look at the valves?
February 22, 2019 at 5:21 pm #34805That is correct.
March 2, 2019 at 11:13 pm #36135I just removed the head and I do have bent valves. Does anyone know of a good mechanic or shop in the north Denver area that can do a valve job? Or would it be better to get a refurbished head and just replace it?
March 4, 2019 at 12:40 pm #36461If you end up having to replace the cylinder head, I’ve had really good experience with a place called cylinder heads international in texas. You can order online and they ship it to you. I’ve used them a number of times. They do great work.
March 5, 2019 at 4:58 am #36574I’m in contact with them. Thanks for the information.
April 21, 2019 at 9:23 pm #46511We did end up replacing the cylinder head. Everything is running fine, but I noticed that the timing belt has a small wobble to it. What would be the cause of that and could it create issues? It’s not completely centered on the cam shaft gear.
April 22, 2019 at 11:57 am #46675Is it just the belt that wobbles or is it the pulley? Hows the tensioner pulley? Might want to replace that if you haven’t already.
April 23, 2019 at 1:03 am #46760Both pulleys are new; we replaced both with a timing belt kit. As far as I can tell, it’s just the belt.
