I know the feeling of clearing the fault codes then turning on the engine and the Check Engine Light stays OFF! Especially after a year. I’m wondering how to diagnose that problem in the future. What signs to look for. Quite honestly your particular issue would be quite difficult. Hello, I’m a newbie to this group but it appears you have multiple things happening and they are compounding.
One bright spot is you’re no longer burning a quart of oil every 300 miles. My guess is the rings on the pistons were shot.
The comment from one of your mechanics “Subarus burn oil” I’m not so sure about. I’ve seen many an old Subaru in the mountain towns of Colorado and Utah and they just go forever.I have three thoughts: 1. Can you share what codes you are getting? 2. I would recommend watching “Introduction to Engine Cylinder Pressure Analysis and Diagnostics”. It’s on the paid subscription as well as the free YouTube channel. (Schrodingers Box). This is pretty advanced info but it will help with a visual mindset of what is happening inside the cylinder. Quite fascinating. 3. After viewing, I would look to find someone in your area that is knowledgeable of this diagnostic troubleshooting. (If your in Denver, I got a guy).
