Just enjoyed the latest (to date) video on ignition coil testing. It’s given me some direction.
My daughter-in-law has a 2006 Hyundai Tucson that has the waste-spark system. I will be looking at it as soon as they bring it over. It runs fine until it gets under high load condition. It will misfire and set a CEL (P0305) on the way up a mountain pass, then when dropping down the backside of the mountain the misfire will stop and the CEL will extinguish. It runs fine in town. I’m trying to figure the best strategy to approach this, but will start with swapping the wire with #2 cylinder, which shares the coil with #5 – then see if the misfire code changes. I will also use the test light method and see if there’s a difference between other cylinders in the spark gap as I move the tip of the light further away. I do suspect a coil, but the plugs/wires were changed for mileage (along with timing belt and other stuff) not too long ago, so there may be a problem with those too. Unfortunately, #1,3,5 plugs are under the intake plenum, but the coil pack and #2,4,6 are accessible up front. There are 3 coils for the 6 cylinder engine. I think my strategy will work to find the problem – what do y’all think?
